Specialization domain

A Researcher in the area of Process Systems Engineering with a wide range of experience in the optimal solution of industrial, scheduling and water networks design problems. Expert in the development of new mathematical programming formulations of the mixed integer linear (MILP) type, featuring different methods of handling time: discrete and continuous; alternative plant configurations: multipurpose and multistage multiproduct plants; diverse modes of operation: short-term and periodic; and different objective functions. Experience in the use of constraint programming (CP) and hybrid methods (MILP/CP), also for scheduling. Experience in the area of Process Integration (design of water using/treatment networks featuring multicontaminants) particularly in the development of LP-based heuristic methods for the proper initialization of the general nonlinear (NLP) problem.

Current main scientific area

Development of mathematical formulations for the optimal scheduling of process plants featuring both batch and continuous processes. Focus on the modeling of time, by continuous-time formulations and on the improvement of current single and multiple time grid approaches with a view to obtain global optimal solutions. Development of efficient solution strategies for the fast and near optimal solution of industrial scheduling problems. These rely on mathematical programming, constraint programming, heuristics or a combination of these methods. <br> Global optimization approaches for nonconvex polynomial programs.<br>Design of user-friendly software that can be used by the process engineer to tackle the problems listed above.

Other scientific activities

First-class analytical and problem solving skills.<br>Experienced user of the following commercial software: <br>GAMS, useful for modelling and solving mathematical programming problems;<br>OPL Development Studio, useful for modelling and solving mathematical programming and constraint programming problems;<br>gPROMS, useful for modelling, and solving chemical engineering problems under dynamic conditions;<br>Aspen Plus, useful for the design and simulation of process plants under steady state conditions, which I’ve taught to 4th year students of DEQ/IST (12 h courses).<br>Visual Basic, an object oriented computer language.
